I could be dead right now @ 10:53 pm

After my last surgery I asked the surgeon what would have happened if I'd lived in a less medically advanced time. She told me in no uncertain terms that if I had ulcerative colitis 75 years ago that I would be dead right now. More specifically, if my grandfather had ulcerative colitis when he was in his mid twenties he would probably have died, and I never would have existed.

I thanked my surgeon for "saving my life" and she smiled and laughed as she walked out the door. I was left to ponder the possibilities.

One of my Father's fraternity brothers died in 1929 during Spring semester because there was "something wrong with his colon." It certainly makes you realize what all of us owe to the advance of medical science.

I felt the same way when I was 10 and got appendicitis (or however the hell you spell it).
