Attention all computer geeks... you know who you are @ 09:10 am

I got a digital copy of the document I briefly mentioned yesterday. So all you computer geeks can take a look at it and give me your opinion. This means you: gorgonous, whitaker, ntang, patrick, and tydel.

It's a PDF, I don't have time to convert it to raw text. Here's the document: rhce-test.pdf

Wow.. That's pretty crazy. And you have to do all that in 2.5 hours? RH 8 alone on that older hardware will take a good chunk of time to install.

Are you allowed to have notes or anything? I'd definitely start practicing at home to make sure you know how to do all that stuff.. Might want to see if you can create a kickstart disk to make the installation process faster to give yourself more time.

We don't have to do all of it. That's just what the test could be, and those are things we should know. He said most people don't finish that part of the test.

None of that stuff is hard to do. It's just a LOT to know. No internet access, no notes. So it's all man pages... Could take quite a while to figure all that syntax out.

I'm impressed. The hard part isn't figuring out how to do it all, it's getting it all done in time.

Are you allowed a 2nd machine/workstation to play with? If so, you could write some perl or shell scripts to automate a lot of it (adding the user accounts, for instance) on the 2nd box while RH8 installs on the first box. Still, yanking out all of the X stuff will make it a lot faster to install, so it's definitely doable. Tough, but doable.

What I really like, though, is that it's all interactive - no multiple choice questions, just a lab test. Out of curiousity, is there a written component too?

There are three parts... the first part is "Here is a broken system... fix it", the second is 100 multiple choice questions, and the third part is the systems installation.

The test won't be quite as hard as what was posted... That was a "you should probably know most of these things for the test" Still it's a LOT of material to know in a small amount of time.

That's some pretty hardcore stuff to do in 2.5 hours. Shit, the RH8 install and kernel compile alone could take that long on a 400mhz. Damn.

most of that's pretty easy to script and the configs are pretty basic. it seems just having the knowledge and NOT SCREWING UP... one big screw-up would blow the test.

sounds like fun though. i'll have to get that sometime.
