What's the deal with mail in rebates? I'm seeing them more and more and on almost every imaginable product. I'm sure it helps drive up sales for a particular item, but do the manufacturers really recover their costs? There are some items that have a pretty hefty rebate, sometimes upwards of 50% of the purchase price. So they drive up sale a little I'm sure. So do the manufacturers just bank on the fact that you'll buy a product with a rebate and then never fill it out. I wonder what percentage of purchases with rebates are ever actually claimed. Does it really drive up sales that much? Or is all just some marketing ploy I don't understand.
