On my way out of the central office today there were some guys hanging out near the door to "the vault." The vault is where all of the copper phone lines come into the central office to be used. So they took me on a quick tour of it. It was amazing to see how all the phone cables come into the office, and how they all work. They have these massive 1800 pair cables (3600 individual wires) running in that are about 4 inches in diameter. They're moving some cables around so what they have to do is essentially cut and move massive amounts of cable and splice them into another connector. It's a huge job, really amazing to see how it all comes together.
